Central AC filters

Central AC air filters in Al Hindawiyah

In Al Hindawiyah, in old downtown Jeddah, the closely built residential and commercial blocks around the markets contain mixed AC systems. Some are separate splits, others have basic distribution beginnings that need simple filtration to keep air moving.

When the filter needs attention

  1. 1

Airflow from the grilles has dropped

When the filter fills with dust the blower works harder to pull air through it, and less reaches the rooms. In Jeddah, dust and humidity combine and block the filter faster than most people expect.

  2. 2

    Dust rings around the diffusers

Grey rings around the grilles mean the air is carrying what it should not. Usually the filter is no longer doing its job, or air is bypassing it through a gap in the frame and reaching the room unfiltered.

  3. 3

Coil freezes or AHU keeps stopping

A common cause of a frozen coil is a clogged filter that cuts airflow across the coil, dropping evaporator pressure until moisture freezes on it. If the unit runs then stops, or air comes out warm, the filter is the first thing worth checking.

Who it's for

  • Living in a villa and noticing dust on furniture

We check the filters on all central AC units in the villa and confirm each filter seats properly against its frame so unfiltered air does not reach the rooms.

  • Managing a commercial building with weak airflow complaints

We inspect the AHU filters across the building, identify which are blocked or bypassing air at the frame, then clean or replace each one according to its type.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Tell us your unit type

WhatsApp a photo of the central unit or AHU, its location and your district, so we know the filter type and where to find it before the visit.

  2. 2

    Filter and frame check

The technician inspects the filter and judges how blocked it is, then checks that it seats squarely against the frame so no unfiltered air slips past into the main airstream.

  3. 3

    Clean or replace

A washable filter is cleaned and left to dry fully before going back in. A disposable one is replaced with a size that fits the frame precisely, because an undersized filter leaves a gap air will always find.

  4. 4

    Post-clean check

After the filter is back in we run the unit and check airflow at the grilles and that the coil face carries no compacted dust slowing heat transfer.

What sets this district apart

Al Hindawiyah is an old district with closely built blocks and narrow streets, where AC systems are mostly separate splits for each flat or shop, though some larger buildings have begun basic air distribution. Dust from the markets and tight streets collects quickly in any filter present, so filter cleaning or replacement needs coordination with shop and flat owners because of narrow entrances and shared spaces.

Al Hindawiyah sits in Jeddah's historic downtown, an old district of closely built residential and commercial blocks around the popular markets.

Most buildings here have separate split units with no central filters, but the basic filters in the indoor units are present and need monthly cleaning.

The AC setup in Al Hindawiyah

  1. 1

Small filters in separate split units

Each split unit's indoor section has a small filter, typically 30x30 to 30x40 cm, mounted in front of the cooling coil.

  2. 2

Basic air distribution in a few larger buildings

A few larger residential buildings have begun installing simple distribution ducts that may contain basic flat filters of 2 to 3 inches.

  3. 3

    Washable reusable filters

Most split unit filters in Al Hindawiyah are washable and reusable several times before replacement is needed.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Hindawiyah

  1. 1

Switch off the unit before the visit

For safe inspection and cleaning, make sure the split unit is completely switched off before the team arrives.

  2. 2

Coordinate with the shop or flat owner

If you're in a commercial space, tell the owner about the visit time to avoid clashing with working hours or customers.

  3. 3

Confirm locations of indoor and outdoor units

Make sure both the indoor unit and outdoor unit are easily accessible, especially if the outdoor one is on a narrow facade or small balcony.

FAQ

Questions about Central AC air filters

What is the difference between a washable and a disposable filter?

A washable filter has a rigid frame with reusable mesh; it is cleaned with water and put back. A disposable one is compressed paper or fibre that is discarded when full. Both must match the frame dimensions precisely, and the technician will confirm which type fits your unit on site.

Can a clogged filter push up the electricity bill?

Yes. When a blocked filter resists airflow the blower runs under higher load, and the compressor runs longer because cooling does not reach the rooms efficiently. Cleaning the filter is the simplest step that reduces consumption without touching any other part of the system.

How does Jeddah dust affect a central AC filter?

Jeddah combines fine airborne dust, salt from the sea and high humidity. Moist dust sticks to filter fibres and forms a denser layer than dry dust does, which means the filter needs more attention than in drier climates. Regular inspection is the only reliable way to know its actual condition.

If the rooms cool slowly, is cleaning the filter enough?

A clogged filter is a common cause of slow cooling but not the only one. After cleaning and refitting we check airflow and air temperature at the grilles. If cooling is still slow there may be an issue with the coil, the blower or something else in the unit, and that calls for a full central AC service visit.

Does the right filter vary from one AHU to another?

Yes. Frame dimensions and depth vary between units, and some AHUs hold multiple filters in a single bank. A filter smaller than the frame leaves a gap that air will always bypass without being filtered. For this reason the technician measures the frame on site and confirms the correct size before cleaning or replacing.

The units here are separate splits, do they have central filters?

No, separate splits have no central filters. Each indoor unit has a small filter in front of the coil that needs washing monthly to keep air flowing.

The nearby markets mean lots of dust, how do we protect the small filters?

Small filters in split units get dirty quickly from market dust and narrow streets. We recommend washing every 2 to 3 weeks instead of monthly, and cleaning the unit's coil with it.

How can I safely clean my split unit's filter myself?

Turn the unit off first, then carefully remove the filter (do not pull hard) and rinse it with warm water and mild soap. Dry it completely before putting it back. If the filter is torn or damaged, replace it instead of washing.

Where do I find a new filter for my split unit, and what does it cost?

The filter varies by unit size and brand. Send us a photo of the unit or its model number on WhatsApp, and we'll confirm the size, price and fitting if needed.
