Cooling fit for a mosque

Mosque HVAC in Al Rabee

In Al Rabee, north Jeddah, the district's modern mosques with high ceilings and spacious halls need advanced central cooling that distributes cold evenly. Alrabih designs ducts and coils for high capacity and low noise to keep worshippers comfortable.

When a mosque needs a specialist approach

  1. 1

    Heat reaching the back rows

Cold air pools near the units and never reaches the back of the hall. In Jeddah's humidity, worshippers in the far rows feel the heat even with the system running. That is a design problem, not a unit fault.

  2. 2

    Noise that disturbs prayer

Unit noise in a quiet hall distracts worshippers and breaks concentration. The right unit type, its position and the air velocity setting all reduce noise to the lowest possible level, and those choices are made at the survey.

  3. 3

A dome or high ceiling that traps heat

Hot air rises and collects under the dome, so the breathing level stays warm even with large units running. We set diffuser angles and air paths at the survey to push that hot layer out rather than cool over the top of it.

Who it's for

  • Building a new mosque that needs AC from the start

We join the design stage to fix duct routes and unit positions before ceilings are closed, so the installation is clean and efficient with no remedial work needed later.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Mosque survey

We visit the mosque outside prayer times to measure the hall, ceiling height and dome, and agree diffuser positions, duct routes and unit locations before any work begins.

  2. 2

    Design and fabrication

We design the system from the survey data and fabricate the ducts in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet, then prepare them for installation.

  3. 3

    Installation at agreed times

We coordinate with mosque management to work between prayers or at times that do not interrupt activities, and we leave the hall clean at the end of each working day.

  4. 4

    Testing and handover

We run the system and measure air distribution at the front and back rows and sound levels, adjusting the balance until comfort is even across the whole hall.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Rabee is a relatively new district with contemporary-design mosques offering better facilities than older areas, featuring spacious prayer halls, high ceilings and sometimes domes, with ample parking and open spaces. This allows installation of a powerful central cooling system with a large outdoor plant and advanced duct network, but the demand for greater comfort and low noise levels calls for high-efficiency units and carefully insulated ducts.

Al Rabee lies in north Jeddah, a modern urban development with contemporary-design mosques and generously sized prayer halls.

Most Al Rabee mosques run high-efficiency central AC systems with powerful plants and complex multi-level duct networks.

The AC setup in Al Rabee

  1. 1

Unified central system with powerful plant

Al Rabee's large halls need one powerful cooling plant with large coils and high-capacity compressors to meet demand.

  2. 2

    Advanced multi-level duct distribution

Advanced duct design with multiple vertical layers and precisely distributed outlets ensures uniform coverage across the expansive hall.

  3. 3

    Ducts with high-grade sound-absorbing insulation

Powerful systems generate more noise, so we use high-quality sound insulation on all main ducts.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Rabee

  1. 1

Obtain full architectural plans and precise measurements

Send the complete architectural plan of the mosque showing main hall, dome, corridors and courtyard with full heights before design work.

  2. 2

    Clarify performance and noise priorities

Tell us whether priority is maximum cooling, lowest noise or balanced performance, as this affects unit selection.

  3. 3

Identify a safe, suitable outdoor unit location

Confirm safe access to the proposed outdoor unit location and that it is clear of obstructions and future construction.

FAQ

Questions about Mosque HVAC

How do you make sure the far rows get enough cooling?

At the survey we set diffuser angles, air velocity and duct routing so cold air travels to the last row. After installation we measure the temperature difference between the front and back rows and adjust each diffuser's balance until that difference is as small as the space allows.

Can you work in a functioning mosque without disrupting prayers?

Yes. We agree a phased schedule with mosque management in advance and divide the work into sessions between prayers. Before each call to prayer we lift tools, cover any temporary openings and return the hall to a usable state, then resume afterwards.

What type of ductwork do you use in prayer halls?

We fabricate ducts in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet, round or rectangular as the design requires. We use Armaflex and Kimmco insulation and Foster sealants to limit heat gain and keep sound transmission through the ductwork as low as possible.

Can the system be set to start just before each prayer time?

Yes. The controls on Carrier, YORK, General, Midea, Gree and Smart Gold units support scheduled start and stop times. At the survey we confirm the scheduling options for the chosen units and programme the timings at handover, so the hall is already cool when worshippers arrive.

Can we cool only part of the hall when fewer people attend?

Yes, if the system is designed in zones. We divide the hall into sections, each with its own unit or closable outlets, so you run the front rows alone when few people attend and the whole hall for Friday prayer and occasions, cutting power use without affecting worshippers.

The main hall is very large with a tall dome, how do you distribute cooling?

We design a multi-layer duct network with regularly spaced outlets to cover every corner, and use powerful plants with large coils to ensure even cooling even under the high dome.

The site is very spacious, where is best to place the outdoor unit?

The spacious site offers flexibility. We choose a location away from the mosque entrance and positioned to avoid recirculated air for high efficiency.

We want high performance but low noise in the prayer hall, is this possible?

Yes, we select low-noise compressors, insulate ducts with high-grade sound-absorbing material, and fit silencers on the outlets.

Heat and humidity are high all year in Jeddah, how do you maintain the system?

We recommend preventive maintenance contracts for regular coil and duct cleaning and refrigerant checks, which keeps efficiency high and extends equipment life.
