Warehouse Cooling

Warehouse HVAC in Al Khumrah

In Al Khumrah south of Jeddah, warehouses and workers face intense heat under metal roofs in a location close to the sea with high humidity. We install a powerful distributed system that withstands humidity and salt and protects stock and workers.

When your warehouse needs a proper HVAC system

  1. 1

    Heat that damages stored stock

Food, pharmaceutical and electronics stock all have storage temperature limits. When a metal warehouse roof bakes under Jeddah's sun, the air inside becomes a direct threat to shelf life and product quality. The solution starts with a survey of the racking layout to find the critical zones.

  2. 2

Workers overheating in the picking area

Workers in the picking and loading area move constantly under a hot roof. Natural ventilation alone is not enough in summer. We choose between direct cooling and evaporative cooling based on a site survey and the indoor humidity level.

  3. 3

Warehouse offices that are never comfortable

Supervisor and reception offices have different needs from the large storage hall. Putting them on one system raises cost and weakens performance in both areas. We give the office zone its own system and link it to the warehouse with pressure-control points.

Who it's for

  • Storing heat-sensitive stock in a warehouse

We locate the critical zone in the racking layout and design an independent cooling system with its own controls, keeping that area at a safe temperature separate from the rest of the warehouse.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey

We visit the warehouse, measure the internal height, review the racking layout and the positions of loading doors and offices, then map the main thermal zones before proposing any system.

  2. 2

    System design and zoning

We design a system for each zone: central or split units for offices and critical stock areas, and evaporative or mechanical ventilation for the picking area where indoor humidity allows it.

  3. 3

    Duct fabrication and installation

We fabricate round and rectangular ductwork in our workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to the site dimensions, insulate with Armaflex or Kimmco materials, then mount the units, run the copper and connect the control points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and handover

We start each zone separately, measure airflow at multiple points across the warehouse floor, and check that all drain lines are clear before handing over.

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Khumrah's warehouses are relatively modern with metal roofs and medium to large sizes, and the zone is very close to the sea, which raises humidity and salt levels in the air markedly. Heat reflected from the roof builds up fast in summer, and high humidity increases the cooling load and speeds corrosion of metals and equipment. Warehouse cooling here needs a powerful central system with salt-and-humidity-resistant materials, regular inspection of condensate, pipes and outdoor units to prevent corrosion and rust, and high-efficiency filters to limit salt and moisture ingress.

Al Khumrah lies south of Jeddah near the coast, a zone of modern warehouses with small factories and loading yards close to the sea and salt air.

Most warehouses here have medium-power central units, and outdoor units are exposed to salt and humidity so need frequent servicing.

The AC setup in Al Khumrah

  1. 1

Powerful central unit with salt protection

Warehouses close to the sea need a powerful central unit with salt-resistant materials and coatings.

  2. 2

    High-efficiency filters and advanced ventilation

Ventilation needs strong filters to block salt particles and moisture before cold air enters.

  3. 3

    Flood-protected drainage systems

The sea-side location needs elevated drain systems or pumps to prevent water backflow during rains and floods.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Khumrah

  1. 1

    Check foundations and water seepage

Before the visit, inspect the warehouse foundations for any signs of groundwater seepage or excess moisture.

  2. 2

Ensure the outdoor unit is sited away from salt spray

Agree with us on outdoor unit placement as far from the sea and salt spray as possible, for example on the roof rather than the front balcony.

  3. 3

Provide details on warehouse use and storage

Tell us what stock is stored and if it needs special protection from humidity or is sensitive to salt exposure.

FAQ

Questions about Warehouse HVAC

Is evaporative cooling right for a warehouse in Jeddah?

It depends on indoor humidity levels and the type of stock stored. In well-ventilated open areas where stock is not sensitive to a small rise in humidity, evaporative cooling can work well. The site survey gives a clear answer before any decision is made.

How do you handle the height in tall warehouse bays?

In a tall bay, cool air settles low and hot air rises, which works in your favour when diffusers are aimed correctly at the working level and the racking. We set diffuser angles and positions during design based on the racking height and the movement aisles.

Can cold storage zones link to the rest of the warehouse system?

Cold rooms and freezer rooms run on their own refrigeration systems, which we install as a separate service. What we handle here is the ambient air around those room doors, so warm warehouse air does not rush in when they open, managed by pressure zoning between the two spaces.

Do warehouse air ducts need insulation?

Yes, especially ducts that run close to the hot metal roof. Without insulation, cool air gains heat before it reaches the diffusers and loses much of its effect. We insulate with Armaflex or Kimmco materials and seal joints with Foster sealants to stop air leaks.

Does airflow distribution differ between tall racking aisles and open floor areas?

Yes. In tall racking aisles the airflow path narrows and slows, so we choose directional diffusers that push air along the aisle length rather than spreading it sideways. In open floor areas we use wider-angle diffusers. The angle and position of each diffuser are set at design stage based on the aisle width and racking height.

Sea salt rusts the units fast, how do you protect the metals?

We use salt-resistant materials in pipes and outdoor units, apply protective coatings to metal parts, and advise regular rinsing of outdoor units with fresh water.

Humidity is very high, is the AC enough or do you need a separate dehumidifier?

The AC reduces humidity but in high-humidity coastal zones you may need a separate dehumidifier for sensitive storage or staff areas.

The outdoor unit is close to the sea, how often does it need cleaning of salt and dust?

We advise monthly inspections and cleaning every two months in summer, and every three months in winter, because salt and moisture clog filters and coils rapidly.

The foundations are near sea level, does rainwater seepage affect drainage?

Yes, AC condensate drainage can be affected by rising groundwater during rainfall, so we advise an elevated drain system or emergency pump.
