When you need a medical HVAC specialist

  1. 1

    Hospital or clinic under construction

The right design starts before any duct is installed, because ventilation and filtration needs differ from the surgical suite to the waiting area. An early survey saves costly alterations after the building is finished.

  2. 2

Departments reporting warm air or odours

In an existing medical building, weak cooling in one department or odours crossing into an adjacent area signals an imbalance in the air distribution or extraction system. Finding the cause needs measurement, not guesswork.

  3. 3

Maintenance contract for a running facility

A hospital does not close for equipment servicing. We schedule preventive maintenance visits department by department, coordinated with facility management, and carry out repairs with the smallest possible effect on daily operations.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Survey and requirements

We visit the facility, map the heat loads and air requirements for each department, and agree the duct routes before any design work begins.

  2. 2

    Design and supply

We design the duct network and fabricate it in our own workshop to SMACNA specifications, and supply units from our authorised brands: Carrier, YORK, General, Midea, Gree and Smart Gold.

  3. 3

    Phased coordinated installation

In operating buildings we work with management to phase the installation so adjacent departments stay open, and control dust and noise away from patient areas.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and follow-up

We commission the systems, measure airflow in each department, and adjust the dampers until the design requirements are met, then hand over the facility with a maintenance plan.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.

What sets this district apart

Al Jamea's hospitals occupy relatively modern multi-storey buildings with closely grouped specialist departments, and require strong central cooling that serves operating theatres, intensive care units and inpatient wards with precise thermal balance. The central systems here are complex and call for regular scheduled maintenance without service disruption, and deep knowledge of automated control systems and distribution through long ductwork.

Al Jamea sits in central Jeddah, a district with multiple hospitals and medical facilities alongside residential and commercial buildings.

Most Al Jamea hospitals run a central chilled-water system with ductwork distributed across different departments and floors.

The AC setup in Al Jamea

  1. 1

    Central chilled-water system

Al Jamea's modern hospitals rely on one or more central chillers serving all departments through a distributed piping network.

  2. 2

    Complex multi-floor ductwork

Air distribution is engineered through main and branch ducts spanning floors via false ceilings and walls, with control dampers and temperature sensors in each department.

  3. 3

Separate plant rooms for control and monitoring

A plant room houses the chiller, pumps and reservoirs, with a control room containing monitoring and automated regulation equipment to maintain stable temperatures.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Jamea

  1. 1

Obtain hospital management approval in advance

Coordination with operations management and the clinical department is essential before each visit to select safe times that do not affect patients and staff.

  2. 2

Confirm the location of plant and control rooms

Tell us the location of the chiller, pumps and control room, and the safe access points to each device before the visit day.

  3. 3

Prepare a list of required temperatures for each department

Ensure we have the temperature and humidity schedule for each department, and the names of the clinical and technical staff we will coordinate with.

FAQ

Questions about Hospital HVAC

How do ventilation needs differ across hospital departments?

Ventilation needs vary from one department to the next based on the activity in each area and the requirements set by the facility's designer and the site survey. Operating theatres need highly filtered, directionally controlled air, while patient rooms, corridors and administrative areas each carry different requirements. We build the duct network and select units from the facility's drawings and its specific requirements, not from general assumptions.

Can systems be maintained without stopping sensitive departments?

Yes, but it requires careful planning before the maintenance date. We agree with facility management on a schedule that names the section and the right time window, then isolate the target section using dampers and blanking plates without affecting adjacent departments. Corrective tasks such as replacing a capacitor or repairing a flare joint are carried out within the agreed time window.

What governs duct network design in a medical building?

Design is governed by the approved facility drawings and each department's requirements as defined by the site survey and the specialist designer. We fabricate ducts in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to project dimensions, and use Kimmco and Armaflex insulation with Foster sealants to control leakage. Distribution and pressure in each section follow the specifications drawn for that department individually.

Do you work with small clinics or only hospitals?

We work with medical facilities of all sizes, from a clinic in a residential district to a multi-storey medical complex. The size of the facility does not change the principle: the site survey is the starting point, and from it we determine unit types, duct dimensions and fresh-air requirements for each zone. Preventive and corrective maintenance contracts are available for clinics and hospitals alike.

Can you service the hospital's AC without stopping medical operations?

Yes, we coordinate maintenance with hospital management to work on separate departments or zones at set times, and we leave each area at a safe temperature before moving on.

Emergency equipment and labs need very precise cooling, how do you ensure that?

We measure temperature and humidity in each department before and after service, and adjust systems to each department's specification, following the clinical lead and biomedical engineer's guidance.

Jeddah's hot, humid air stresses central cooling systems, how do you handle that?

We perform more frequent filter and coil cleaning cycles, especially during summer, and test the air quality exiting the ducts to prevent moisture and mould buildup.

The pipework from the chiller to different departments is very long, is there heat loss?

Yes, heat loss can occur over long pipe runs, so we fit adequate thermal insulation on all chilled-water pipes, and test pressure and temperature at key distribution points regularly.
