HVAC for learning spaces

School HVAC in Al Sahil

In Al Sahil, the beachfront schools face high humidity and salt spray affecting AC units. We design systems that distribute cool air evenly across classrooms and operate quietly, with comprehensive maintenance scheduled during the summer break.

When a school needs a specialist

  1. 1

    Hot classrooms affecting learning

When teachers report heat that breaks concentration and tires students by midday, the problem is usually in air distribution, not unit capacity. A site survey finds where it goes wrong and what is needed.

  2. 2

    Unit noise interrupting the lesson

A unit in the wrong spot, a clogged filter or an unbalanced fan creates noise that distracts the class. We find the source on site and fix it, and at installation we choose units and routes suited to a classroom environment.

  3. 3

    Upgrading the system over summer

The long summer break is the only window for installation or replacement work that needs extended hours inside classrooms. We plan with school management to finish before the first school day so the timetable is not affected.

Who it's for

  • Running a school that needs maintenance

We set up a preventive and corrective maintenance contract covering classrooms, the prayer room and corridors, carrying out major work in the summer break so the school year starts with a sound system.

  • Building a new school that needs AC design

We review drawings with the contractor and design air distribution and ductwork before ceilings close, so every classroom has even airflow and low noise from the first day of use.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    School building survey

We visit the school, measure classrooms, corridors and the prayer room, and record heat sources and loads in each space before making any recommendation.

  2. 2

    System design and planning

We draw a layout showing unit positions, duct routes and ventilation openings, and agree an installation schedule with school management so work does not clash with classes.

  3. 3

    Installation during the break

We carry out installation during the holiday or at times that do not disrupt school, mounting units in high or protected positions away from students.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and handover

We run the full system and check air distribution in every classroom, measuring the air at desk level, then hand over to the school with a record of what was done.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Sahil schools are modern builds where the coastal location brings constant humidity and salt-spray corrosion to metals and coils. Classrooms are open and wide, requiring balanced air distribution to avoid hot and cold spots that break student concentration. Central or multi-split systems work best here, with regular cleaning and maintenance to manage salt and humidity damage.

Al Sahil lies on Jeddah's southern Red Sea coast, a modern district with new schools exposed to coastal humidity and salt air.

Central and multi-split systems dominate coastal school AC setups to cover the wide classrooms and open spaces typical here.

The AC setup in Al Sahil

  1. 1

    Central system for teaching halls

Large classrooms and open halls in modern schools need one balanced outdoor unit feeding multiple rooms through calculated ducts.

  2. 2

Separate splits for offices and administration

Administrative offices and staff rooms operate on different schedules than classrooms, so separate splits give flexible timing and control.

  3. 3

    Outdoor units on roofs

Coastal schools mount outdoor units on secure roofs away from direct wind and salt spray, with managed water drainage.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Sahil

  1. 1

Identify all classrooms and open spaces

Provide a school map and confirm classroom sizes and open halls so we can calculate system capacity accurately.

  2. 2

Allow roof and exterior wall access

Ensure our team can safely reach the roof and assess exterior walls to position the outdoor units securely.

  3. 3

Coordinate visit timing with school management

Arrange the visit during non-teaching periods or official holidays so we can measure and design without interrupting classes.

FAQ

Questions about School HVAC

How do you keep noise low inside the classroom?

Noise usually comes from high air velocity or an indoor unit mounted on a shared wall between two classrooms. We select units with low sound ratings, calculate air velocity at each outlet to prevent whistling, and insulate duct runs above the suspended ceiling. The exact unit position and diffuser angle are decided during a site survey of each room.

How do you handle the prayer room and corridors alongside classrooms?

The prayer room needs wide, quiet air distribution at low level above worshippers, which is quite different from a classroom. Corridors need enough cooling to prevent hot air from flowing into classrooms when doors open. We design each zone on its own air circuit with a separate thermostat; the final layout depends on floor area and ceiling height on site.

Can ductwork be added to an existing school building?

In most cases, yes. We check the gap between the ceiling and the slab, and how accessible the ceiling void is, before making any decision. We fabricate round or rectangular ducts in our own workshop to match the building's exact dimensions, and we route them to avoid structural columns and penetrations. Where ceiling space is too tight, cassette or concealed units may be the better fit.

Why are indoor units positioned out of students' reach?

A low-mounted unit in a room full of students is easily damaged: fins get bent, the drain port gets blocked, and the fan grille gets broken. We mount units at heights and positions that keep them clear of students, while still delivering cooled air down to the seated zone. The precise position is set after the team measures ceiling height and seating layout in each room.

Can the work be done during the school year?

Large tasks such as running new ductwork or replacing multiple units are scheduled during the long summer break to avoid any disruption to lessons. Routine maintenance and isolated repairs can be arranged outside school hours or at weekends in coordination with school management. Work inside classrooms during the school day requires a site assessment first to confirm it can be done without causing disruption.

Does coastal humidity and salt damage school AC units in Al Sahil?

Yes, humidity and salt accelerate corrosion on coils and metals. We specify salt-resistant materials and increase maintenance frequency during the school year.

How do you ensure even cool air across all classrooms?

We use a central or multi-split system with balanced ducts and separate controls per classroom to maintain even temperature across all rooms.

Coastal winds are strong, where do you place outdoor units?

We mount outdoor units on school roofs or sheltered walls away from direct wind, with robust fastening and safe water drainage.

When do you run full maintenance for school AC systems?

We schedule comprehensive maintenance just before the summer break ends, ensuring all systems are ready when the new school year begins.
