Retail cooling without downtime

Mall & retail HVAC in Al Sahil

In Al Sahil, south Jeddah, mixed retail and residential-commercial blocks run constant trading activity, requiring HVAC that handles door swings onto coastal heat and brine exposure. Alrabih designs systems for efficient cooling and protection from coastal humidity and salt spray.

When you need a retail HVAC specialist

  1. 1

A new mall or shopping centre

A poor design from the start means cold zones next to stifling ones and endless tenant complaints. We study the heat load of each zone separately and choose the right unit type before the ceiling is built.

  2. 2

An existing shop with uneven cooling

The back of the shop is cold while the front near the door stays hot at peak hours. The cause is usually the air outlet layout or the unit size; a site survey identifies which and fixes the problem without replacing the whole system.

  3. 3

Condensate dripping on shelves or display

A single drip on stock or a glass display front damages the product and the shop's image. The cause is usually weak insulation, a blocked condensate line or an unlevel unit, all of which can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit.

Who it's for

  • Opening a new shop inside a mall

We design an independent unit for your space and install ductwork and condensate lines before finishing work so your opening is not delayed.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and loads

We visit the site and map every heat source: entrances, lighting, expected crowd density and facade orientation, then size the units correctly for each section.

  2. 2

    Design and materials

We design the duct network in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to dimensions that give even air distribution, and select units from brands we distribute such as Carrier, YORK and Gree.

  3. 3

    Installation coordinated on site

We coordinate installation with the project programme so ductwork does not delay finishing trades, and run Mueller copper in runs of up to 30 metres without welded joints to reduce potential leak points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and maintenance contract

We start up the system and check air distribution in every section, then set a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule timed so work never overlaps with the shop's trading hours.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Sahil is a coastal district mixing retail shops, residential-commercial blocks and small hotels, with exposed seafront facades that spike cooling load especially in lower floors where foot traffic runs constant. High humidity and sea salt attack the metal parts in units and ducts, calling for regular maintenance and frequent coil and drain cleaning. The system design here must resist corrosion and sustained dampness.

Al Sahil sits on Jeddah's south coastal front, a mixed commercial and tourism district with high exposure to sea salt and humid air.

Most shops and small hotels here run multiple split units or central HVAC systems because of larger floor plates and higher ceilings.

The AC setup in Al Sahil

  1. 1

Multiple split units for larger retail shops

Spacious retail shops in Al Sahil need multiple split units distributed across the floor, since one unit cannot cover the heat load from exposed facades.

  2. 2

Central HVAC for hotels and retail complexes

Small hotels and multi-storey retail complexes benefit from a single central system that is easier to maintain and distributes conditioned air evenly.

  3. 3

Isolated condensation drains resistant to salt and humidity

Outdoor units on coastal facades need separate, protected condensation drains to resist salt clogging and corrosion.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Sahil

  1. 1

Confirm outdoor unit placement on facades

Check that outdoor units can be mounted on safe facades away from direct sea spray exposure as much as possible.

  2. 2

    Schedule maintenance outside shopping hours

Plan periodic maintenance and cleaning during off-hours or late evenings to avoid disrupting retail operations.

  3. 3

Ensure access to main shutoffs and drains

Ensure main shut-off valves and drain lines are easily accessible for routine maintenance and regular cleaning.

FAQ

Questions about Mall & retail HVAC

How do you handle doors that open onto the street all day?

An open door pushes in hot humid air and spikes the heat load suddenly. We include that load in the design and direct a supply outlet above the entrance to form an air barrier that reduces mixing. The survey confirms which arrangement suits each specific doorway.

Do you install separate units for each mall tenant?

Yes. A separate unit per tenant means each shop controls its own cooling and a fault in one unit does not affect the neighbour. It also makes consumption readings straightforward and makes maintenance responsibility clear for each party.

Why do you prefer rooftop packaged units for malls?

A rooftop packaged unit keeps the condenser and evaporator in one casing above the roof, freeing every inch of shop floor from outdoor units and shortening the duct run. Maintenance happens on the roof without entering the shop, which fits scheduling work outside trading hours.

How do you handle Jeddah's heat and its effect on rooftop units?

Rooftop units in Jeddah work in hot, salty and dusty air that strains the condenser and speeds fin corrosion. We specify units with corrosion-resistant coatings and include coil cleaning and compressor and condenser checks in the preventive schedule of every maintenance contract.

Does air distribution design differ between a small shop and a large mall?

The site survey decides. A small shop may need only a concealed unit with directional grilles, while a mall requires a duct network with dampers zoned by area. In both cases the positions of lighting, visitor traffic and entry doors are recorded before supply outlets are placed.

Does Al Sahil retail HVAC need protection from sea salt?

Yes, sea salt speeds corrosion of aluminium and copper in units and ducts. We choose salt-resistant materials and clean coils regularly to prevent salt buildup.

Shoppers and guests constantly open doors, how do we stop heat pouring in?

We size the system with enough cooling capacity to handle repeated door openings, and fit air curtains at main entrances to reduce incoming heat.

Al Sahil's high humidity affects goods in shops, how does HVAC help?

The system pulls excess moisture through managed condensation drains cleaned regularly, and recirculates air in a way that keeps humidity moderate.

Powering outdoor units on coastal facades, are there safety risks?

Yes, moisture and salt attack electrical connections. We use moisture-resistant cables and ground firmly to prevent any leakage risk.
