When your warehouse needs a proper HVAC system

  1. 1

    Heat that damages stored stock

Food, pharmaceutical and electronics stock all have storage temperature limits. When a metal warehouse roof bakes under Jeddah's sun, the air inside becomes a direct threat to shelf life and product quality. The solution starts with a survey of the racking layout to find the critical zones.

  2. 2

Workers overheating in the picking area

Workers in the picking and loading area move constantly under a hot roof. Natural ventilation alone is not enough in summer. We choose between direct cooling and evaporative cooling based on a site survey and the indoor humidity level.

  3. 3

Warehouse offices that are never comfortable

Supervisor and reception offices have different needs from the large storage hall. Putting them on one system raises cost and weakens performance in both areas. We give the office zone its own system and link it to the warehouse with pressure-control points.

Who it's for

  • Storing heat-sensitive stock in a warehouse

We locate the critical zone in the racking layout and design an independent cooling system with its own controls, keeping that area at a safe temperature separate from the rest of the warehouse.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey

We visit the warehouse, measure the internal height, review the racking layout and the positions of loading doors and offices, then map the main thermal zones before proposing any system.

  2. 2

    System design and zoning

We design a system for each zone: central or split units for offices and critical stock areas, and evaporative or mechanical ventilation for the picking area where indoor humidity allows it.

  3. 3

    Duct fabrication and installation

We fabricate round and rectangular ductwork in our workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to the site dimensions, insulate with Armaflex or Kimmco materials, then mount the units, run the copper and connect the control points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and handover

We start each zone separately, measure airflow at multiple points across the warehouse floor, and check that all drain lines are clear before handing over.

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.

What sets this district apart

Muraykh is an industrial district with medium-sized warehouses, assembly workshops and storage facilities, many with metal roofs and broad concrete floors, exposed directly to sun all day. The district is inland with weak natural ventilation due to dense industrial buildings, and gaps between warehouses are tight. This means thermal load is very high and the system needs strong, reliable capacity, with careful study of outdoor unit placement on limited roof space.

Muraykh lies in east Jeddah, an industrial district of medium-sized warehouses and workshops with metal roofs and dense building clusters.

Most warehouses here need one strong outdoor unit or two medium-capacity units because of moderate footprints and large thermal loads.

The AC setup in Muraykh

  1. 1

One strong or two medium-capacity units

Depending on area and thermal load, we may use one powerful unit or two medium-capacity units distributed across roof or exterior walls.

  2. 2

    Ventilation and air distribution system

Adding vents or ceiling fans can help distribute cool air more evenly and reduce stress on the central system.

  3. 3

    Dust and particulate protection

Proximity to the main road means more dust, so we select effective filters and recommend frequent regular maintenance.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Muraykh

  1. 1

Check roof safety and structural support

Confirm the roof is safe and can support the outdoor unit's weight, and if you have doubts send photos or a video of the roof.

  2. 2

Identify all obstacles around the warehouse

Tell us about any nearby government buildings or protected areas, and the gaps between your warehouse and neighbouring buildings, to find the best outdoor unit location.

  3. 3

    Collect current electrical load readings

Get a record from your electrician or the main panel showing available electrical capacity and existing circuits.

FAQ

Questions about Warehouse HVAC

Is evaporative cooling right for a warehouse in Jeddah?

It depends on indoor humidity levels and the type of stock stored. In well-ventilated open areas where stock is not sensitive to a small rise in humidity, evaporative cooling can work well. The site survey gives a clear answer before any decision is made.

How do you handle the height in tall warehouse bays?

In a tall bay, cool air settles low and hot air rises, which works in your favour when diffusers are aimed correctly at the working level and the racking. We set diffuser angles and positions during design based on the racking height and the movement aisles.

Can cold storage zones link to the rest of the warehouse system?

Cold rooms and freezer rooms run on their own refrigeration systems, which we install as a separate service. What we handle here is the ambient air around those room doors, so warm warehouse air does not rush in when they open, managed by pressure zoning between the two spaces.

Do warehouse air ducts need insulation?

Yes, especially ducts that run close to the hot metal roof. Without insulation, cool air gains heat before it reaches the diffusers and loses much of its effect. We insulate with Armaflex or Kimmco materials and seal joints with Foster sealants to stop air leaks.

Does airflow distribution differ between tall racking aisles and open floor areas?

Yes. In tall racking aisles the airflow path narrows and slows, so we choose directional diffusers that push air along the aisle length rather than spreading it sideways. In open floor areas we use wider-angle diffusers. The angle and position of each diffuser are set at design stage based on the aisle width and racking height.

The warehouse is old and the roof deteriorating, can the outdoor unit go elsewhere?

Yes, we assess the roof's safety first, and if it is not sound we use an exterior wall or safe ground support frame to mount the unit instead of the roof.

There is a government building very close to my warehouse, are there installation restrictions?

Some government agencies have specific location requirements, so we check with you for any local requirements before installation.

Air from the main road carries a lot of dust, does this affect the outdoor unit?

Heavy dust increases load on filters and coils, so we select units with high-efficiency filters and recommend cleaning every month or two depending on dust levels.

Old wiring may not handle a large additional load, how do you deal with that?

We inspect the main panel and existing wiring, and if they are insufficient we recommend upgrading them or reducing system capacity to match the building's capacity.
