Chiller and AHU installation

Chiller & AHU installation in Harat Al Bahar

In Harat Al Bahar, old downtown Jeddah, installing chillers and AHU units in cramped commercial and residential buildings calls for flexibility and careful planning. Alrabih's team routes insulated pipework through narrow passages and avoids damage to existing walls and suspended ceilings.

When you need this installation

  1. 1

A new commercial or government building

The building is ready but the central cooling plant is not yet installed. You need a team to lift the chiller to the roof, prepare the bases and run chilled water pipework to AHUs on every floor.

  2. 2

An existing unit vibrates and makes noise

Constant vibration loosens pipe joints and fatigues mechanical components. If the unit is not sitting on proper vibration isolators, that is corrected during reinstallation; the site survey determines which isolator type is needed.

  3. 3

    Extending an existing building

Adding floors or new areas means extra AHUs and extending the chilled water network. We connect the extension to the existing plant after verifying the current chiller capacity, which the site study determines.

Who it's for

  • Building a hospital or hotel that needs a central cooling plant

We visit the site before the building is complete to plan pipe routes and the plant room, then lift the chiller, mount AHUs on every floor and commission the full system.

    Ask on WhatsApp
  • Replaced an old chiller but connections do not match

We survey the new chiller and existing pipework, fabricate any transition pieces needed in our workshop, then reconnect and pressure-test the network before start-up.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and design

We visit the site to measure the plant room or roof, check pipe and duct routes, and determine lifting requirements and the right vibration isolator type for the building.

  2. 2

    Base preparation and lifting

We prepare the chiller and AHU bases, fix the vibration isolators, lift the units into final position and check they are level before any connections are made.

  3. 3

    Pipework and ductwork

We run the chilled water pipes, insulate them and clad them in aluminium sheet to resist Jeddah's humid salty air, then connect each AHU to its duct network.

  4. 4

    Pressure test and commissioning

We pressure-test the pipework to confirm there are no leaks, then run the full system, measure air conditions at each AHU and adjust dampers until the required air distribution is achieved.

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.

What sets this district apart

Harat Al Bahar's buildings are old and densely used, mixing shops, offices and residential flats in very limited space. Ceilings are sometimes low and pipes must navigate tight passages and sharp angles without causing moisture or mould on the ceilings. Coordination with multiple parties (shop owners, residents, building managers) is essential before installation begins.

Harat Al Bahar sits in Jeddah's historic downtown, an old, tightly built area of commercial and residential blocks near the traditional market.

Most buildings here were not originally designed for central cooling, so installation requires reassessing electrical capacity and available space.

The AC setup in Harat Al Bahar

  1. 1

Compact chiller and integrated AHU units

The cramped buildings here often need a small to medium capacity chiller and compact integrated AHU units rather than large separate units.

  2. 2

Flexible pipes routed through existing passages

Rather than opening walls or ceilings, we fix insulated pipes to existing passages and corners to minimise damage and disruption during installation.

  3. 3

Medium-sized vibration base on the roof

The limited rooftop accommodates a proportionate vibration base for the relatively small chiller while keeping space for regular maintenance.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Harat Al Bahar

  1. 1

Prepare safe access to roof and passages

Ensure the roof is safe for work and internal passages are clear of items that might obstruct the team or pipe installation.

  2. 2

Coordinate with building manager, shops and residents

Notify all occupants of the start date, expected duration and any impact on access or services during the work period.

  3. 3

Locate electrical panels, water and drainage

Identify the main electrical panel, water source and drainage location before the visit to ensure correct planning of connections.

FAQ

Questions about Chiller & AHU installation

How is the chiller unit lifted to the roof?

The method depends on the chiller weight, the building height and the space available around the site. The survey determines whether a crane or other equipment is used, and we verify that the roof structure can carry the load before setting the unit on its base.

Why do chilled water pipes need aluminium cladding in Jeddah?

Chilled water pipes carry cold water through hot, humid, salty air. Without external protection, insulation deteriorates from moisture and salt and loses effectiveness. Aluminium cladding protects the insulation from outdoor air on rooftops and the humid interior air found in coastal buildings like those in Jeddah.

Can you connect AHUs to an existing duct network?

Yes, if the existing ducts are in good condition and match the new unit's connections. At the survey we check the duct opening sizes, the duct condition and the plenum arrangement, and confirm whether part of the network needs adjustment or transition pieces need to be fabricated in our workshop.

What does system commissioning involve?

After the pipe pressure test we run the chiller and AHUs, measuring air temperature and pressure at each unit's outlets. We adjust dampers and valves to achieve the designed air and water flow to every zone in the building, and record the final readings before handover.

What is the difference between placing the chiller on concrete inertia bases and on rubber anti-vibration mounts?

A concrete inertia base adds mass that dampens the chiller's own vibration and holds the unit steady when the compressor starts. Rubber anti-vibration mounts interrupt the path of vibration before it reaches the roof slab. Whether to use one approach or both depends on the site survey, which takes into account the roof structure, the size of the unit and the building design.

Our building is very old and cramped, can you install a chiller and AHU units here?

Yes, we assess the building first to confirm there is roof space, sufficient electrical capacity, and a safe way to route pipes through existing passages.

How do you route pipes through narrow passages and tight corners?

We use flexible insulated pipes and aluminium cladding, fix them to walls or ceilings with secure brackets, and plan the route beforehand to avoid damage and keep passages unobstructed.

Humidity is high near the coast here, does it affect the pipes and equipment?

Thick insulation and aluminium protect the pipes from humidity and mould, and we select the chiller and pump units to withstand coastal moisture.

Do we need to coordinate with neighbours and shop owners before starting?

Yes, pre-coordination is essential because installation may affect access for people and goods, so we recommend notifying all occupants of the start date and expected duration.
