Retail cooling without downtime

Mall & retail HVAC in Al Sharqiyah

In Al Sharqiyah, north-east Jeddah, retail spaces face shifting heat loads as doors open to the outdoor temperature, lighting runs heavy, and footfall rises and falls throughout the day. Alrabih designs and installs systems that adapt to these swings, protect stock from moisture, and are serviced at times that do not disrupt trading.

When you need a retail HVAC specialist

  1. 1

A new mall or shopping centre

A poor design from the start means cold zones next to stifling ones and endless tenant complaints. We study the heat load of each zone separately and choose the right unit type before the ceiling is built.

  2. 2

An existing shop with uneven cooling

The back of the shop is cold while the front near the door stays hot at peak hours. The cause is usually the air outlet layout or the unit size; a site survey identifies which and fixes the problem without replacing the whole system.

  3. 3

Condensate dripping on shelves or display

A single drip on stock or a glass display front damages the product and the shop's image. The cause is usually weak insulation, a blocked condensate line or an unlevel unit, all of which can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit.

Who it's for

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and loads

We visit the site and map every heat source: entrances, lighting, expected crowd density and facade orientation, then size the units correctly for each section.

  2. 2

    Design and materials

We design the duct network in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to dimensions that give even air distribution, and select units from brands we distribute such as Carrier, YORK and Gree.

  3. 3

    Installation coordinated on site

We coordinate installation with the project programme so ductwork does not delay finishing trades, and run Mueller copper in runs of up to 30 metres without welded joints to reduce potential leak points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and maintenance contract

We start up the system and check air distribution in every section, then set a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule timed so work never overlaps with the shop's trading hours.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Sharqiyah is a developed district with modern residential buildings, specialist shops and local markets with multiple entry points, served by contemporary planning and reasonably wide streets. The shops here serve a growing population and operate long hours, requiring HVAC that balances visitor comfort with energy efficiency. Its relative proximity to the coast increases humidity's effect on stock and equipment, and coordination with shop management is usually straightforward.

Al Sharqiyah lies in north-east Jeddah, a contemporary development of modern residential buildings and specialist shops at a relatively short distance from the coast.

Shops and markets here typically use one or two outdoor units with distributed ducts covering separate sections.

The AC setup in Al Sharqiyah

  1. 1

One or two outdoor units with distributed ductwork

Markets and shops in Al Sharqiyah usually run one or two rooftop or yard-mounted units with distributed ducts covering corridors and separate sections.

  2. 2

    Adjustable vents in each section

We install adjustable vents that can be opened or closed, so the shop manager controls cooling distribution to meet daily needs.

  3. 3

    Dedicated drains with mould traps

Since local markets house food shops, we install dedicated, secure drains that prevent moisture and odour build-up.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Sharqiyah

  1. 1

    Clarify outdoor unit location

Tell us where the outdoor unit(s) will be, roof or rear yard, and confirm safe access is possible.

  2. 2

    Schedule work during low-traffic times

We recommend installation and maintenance during early morning or after-hours slots, so customer traffic and daily sales are not disrupted.

  3. 3

Provide a map of sections, corridors and entries

Send us a layout showing different sections, long corridors and multiple entries, so we determine how many vents and ducts are needed.

FAQ

Questions about Mall & retail HVAC

How do you handle doors that open onto the street all day?

An open door pushes in hot humid air and spikes the heat load suddenly. We include that load in the design and direct a supply outlet above the entrance to form an air barrier that reduces mixing. The survey confirms which arrangement suits each specific doorway.

Do you install separate units for each mall tenant?

Yes. A separate unit per tenant means each shop controls its own cooling and a fault in one unit does not affect the neighbour. It also makes consumption readings straightforward and makes maintenance responsibility clear for each party.

Why do you prefer rooftop packaged units for malls?

A rooftop packaged unit keeps the condenser and evaporator in one casing above the roof, freeing every inch of shop floor from outdoor units and shortening the duct run. Maintenance happens on the roof without entering the shop, which fits scheduling work outside trading hours.

How do you handle Jeddah's heat and its effect on rooftop units?

Rooftop units in Jeddah work in hot, salty and dusty air that strains the condenser and speeds fin corrosion. We specify units with corrosion-resistant coatings and include coil cleaning and compressor and condenser checks in the preventive schedule of every maintenance contract.

Does air distribution design differ between a small shop and a large mall?

The site survey decides. A small shop may need only a concealed unit with directional grilles, while a mall requires a duct network with dampers zoned by area. In both cases the positions of lighting, visitor traffic and entry doors are recorded before supply outlets are placed.

Our shop is near the coast, does humidity affect the system itself, not just the stock?

Yes, high humidity accelerates corrosion in pipes and connectors, so we recommend regular system inspections and rust inhibitor on metal parts.

Our shop has several entry points, how do we control heat loss when doors open?

We select outdoor unit capacity that handles heat loss from door openings, and recommend air curtains at main entries.

Our local market has long corridors and separate sections, how does cooling reach all sections equally?

We install properly sized insulated ducts with distribution vents in each section, controlled by a central thermostat managing cold air flow.

Our markets are busy with fresh food shops, do we need special drainage for excess moisture?

Yes, we install dedicated drains with proper slope to the outside and safety traps that prevent odours and mould from backing up into the system.
