Retail cooling without downtime

Mall & retail HVAC in Al Shiraa

In Al Shiraa, north Jeddah, modern retail units need HVAC that balances frequent door openings onto outdoor heat, strong lighting and fluctuating footfall. Alrabih designs and installs systems built to absorb these swinging loads and protect goods from moisture.

When you need a retail HVAC specialist

  1. 1

A new mall or shopping centre

A poor design from the start means cold zones next to stifling ones and endless tenant complaints. We study the heat load of each zone separately and choose the right unit type before the ceiling is built.

  2. 2

An existing shop with uneven cooling

The back of the shop is cold while the front near the door stays hot at peak hours. The cause is usually the air outlet layout or the unit size; a site survey identifies which and fixes the problem without replacing the whole system.

  3. 3

Condensate dripping on shelves or display

A single drip on stock or a glass display front damages the product and the shop's image. The cause is usually weak insulation, a blocked condensate line or an unlevel unit, all of which can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit.

Who it's for

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and loads

We visit the site and map every heat source: entrances, lighting, expected crowd density and facade orientation, then size the units correctly for each section.

  2. 2

    Design and materials

We design the duct network in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to dimensions that give even air distribution, and select units from brands we distribute such as Carrier, YORK and Gree.

  3. 3

    Installation coordinated on site

We coordinate installation with the project programme so ductwork does not delay finishing trades, and run Mueller copper in runs of up to 30 metres without welded joints to reduce potential leak points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and maintenance contract

We start up the system and check air distribution in every section, then set a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule timed so work never overlaps with the shop's trading hours.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Shiraa is a relatively modern district with spacious layouts and open planning, so the malls and retail units here are larger and higher-ceilinged than those in older areas. That means the HVAC needs stronger units and balanced air distribution across wider spaces, with ducting designed to avoid pressure loss. Maintenance is scheduled in early or late hours to stay clear of trading times.

Al Shiraa is in north Jeddah, a district of modern shopping centres and spacious residential blocks with open street planning.

Most retail units here take either high-capacity split systems or central HVAC with ducting in suspended ceilings.

The AC setup in Al Shiraa

  1. 1

    High-capacity split for standalone retail

Standalone retail units in Al Shiraa use 3, 5 ton splits to handle door cycles and strong lighting.

  2. 2

    Central HVAC with suspended ductwork

Larger malls rely on central systems with suspended ducting to distribute cool air evenly across wide spaces.

  3. 3

    Isolated condensate drain outlets

Drains and pans route condensate away from sales areas to protect goods and floors from moisture.

FAQ

Questions about Mall & retail HVAC

How do you handle doors that open onto the street all day?

An open door pushes in hot humid air and spikes the heat load suddenly. We include that load in the design and direct a supply outlet above the entrance to form an air barrier that reduces mixing. The survey confirms which arrangement suits each specific doorway.

Do you install separate units for each mall tenant?

Yes. A separate unit per tenant means each shop controls its own cooling and a fault in one unit does not affect the neighbour. It also makes consumption readings straightforward and makes maintenance responsibility clear for each party.

Why do you prefer rooftop packaged units for malls?

A rooftop packaged unit keeps the condenser and evaporator in one casing above the roof, freeing every inch of shop floor from outdoor units and shortening the duct run. Maintenance happens on the roof without entering the shop, which fits scheduling work outside trading hours.

How do you handle Jeddah's heat and its effect on rooftop units?

Rooftop units in Jeddah work in hot, salty and dusty air that strains the condenser and speeds fin corrosion. We specify units with corrosion-resistant coatings and include coil cleaning and compressor and condenser checks in the preventive schedule of every maintenance contract.

Does air distribution design differ between a small shop and a large mall?

The site survey decides. A small shop may need only a concealed unit with directional grilles, while a mall requires a duct network with dampers zoned by area. In both cases the positions of lighting, visitor traffic and entry doors are recorded before supply outlets are placed.

Heat floods in every time the shop door opens, how do you manage that?

We choose units with adequate cooling capacity and position air return vents strategically near the entrance to buffer the heat shock.

The shop lighting is very bright, does that increase the cooling load?

Yes, bright modern lighting generates extra heat, so we factor this into the design and upsize the unit based on the lighting count and type.

The shop is inside a mall with limited outdoor air, does that change the design?

Yes, inside a mall we rely on efficient air recirculation and coordinate with the mall management on shared ventilation sources.

Moisture from the cooling is staining the goods, how do you prevent this?

We install properly sized drain pans and route condensate away from the shop, and activate humidity control as part of routine maintenance.
