HVAC for learning spaces

School HVAC in Breiman

School HVAC in Breiman requires a system that distributes cool air evenly across all classrooms and runs quietly so as not to distract pupils. Alrabih's team designs the distribution layout and uses the summer break for full maintenance before the academic year restarts.

When a school needs a specialist

  1. 1

    Hot classrooms affecting learning

When teachers report heat that breaks concentration and tires students by midday, the problem is usually in air distribution, not unit capacity. A site survey finds where it goes wrong and what is needed.

  2. 2

    Unit noise interrupting the lesson

A unit in the wrong spot, a clogged filter or an unbalanced fan creates noise that distracts the class. We find the source on site and fix it, and at installation we choose units and routes suited to a classroom environment.

  3. 3

    Upgrading the system over summer

The long summer break is the only window for installation or replacement work that needs extended hours inside classrooms. We plan with school management to finish before the first school day so the timetable is not affected.

Who it's for

  • Running a school that needs maintenance

We set up a preventive and corrective maintenance contract covering classrooms, the prayer room and corridors, carrying out major work in the summer break so the school year starts with a sound system.

  • Building a new school that needs AC design

We review drawings with the contractor and design air distribution and ductwork before ceilings close, so every classroom has even airflow and low noise from the first day of use.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    School building survey

We visit the school, measure classrooms, corridors and the prayer room, and record heat sources and loads in each space before making any recommendation.

  2. 2

    System design and planning

We draw a layout showing unit positions, duct routes and ventilation openings, and agree an installation schedule with school management so work does not clash with classes.

  3. 3

    Installation during the break

We carry out installation during the holiday or at times that do not disrupt school, mounting units in high or protected positions away from students.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and handover

We run the full system and check air distribution in every classroom, measuring the air at desk level, then hand over to the school with a record of what was done.

What sets this district apart

Schools in Breiman are spread across relatively modern residential areas with moderate outdoor space, and classrooms are distributed across horizontal or vertical wings. Central or semi-central AC suits this layout, but even distribution across all rooms requires precise duct and outlet sizing to avoid dead spots and noise in the corridors. Seasonal maintenance before term starts is essential to minimise breakdowns during the school year.

Breiman lies in East Jeddah, a modern residential area with schools, villas and expanding residential complexes.

Most schools in Breiman use central AC with horizontal distribution ducts, and the compressor units are mounted in dedicated spaces behind the building.

The AC setup in Breiman

  1. 1

    Central system with horizontal ducts

Most Breiman schools are large enough for central AC that distributes cooling through horizontal ducts running from the plant room to the classrooms.

  2. 2

    Outdoor units in rear courtyard

Compressor units are typically installed in a dedicated rear courtyard or adjacent space away from classrooms to minimise noise transmission.

  3. 3

    Temperature control system with thermostats

An automated control system with a thermostat in the corridor or office allows temperature adjustment from a single point to prevent tampering and faults.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Breiman

  1. 1

Confirm access to the roof and rear yard

Ensure the team can access the roof where ducts or units may be mounted, and the rear yard for installing outdoor compressors.

  2. 2

Schedule the visit during the summer break

Arrange the site visit with the school administration before term begins, allowing planning and maintenance without disrupting pupils.

  3. 3

Bring the school layout and classroom plan

Providing the classroom layout and expected pupil numbers per room helps us calculate cooling loads accurately.

FAQ

Questions about School HVAC

How do you keep noise low inside the classroom?

Noise usually comes from high air velocity or an indoor unit mounted on a shared wall between two classrooms. We select units with low sound ratings, calculate air velocity at each outlet to prevent whistling, and insulate duct runs above the suspended ceiling. The exact unit position and diffuser angle are decided during a site survey of each room.

How do you handle the prayer room and corridors alongside classrooms?

The prayer room needs wide, quiet air distribution at low level above worshippers, which is quite different from a classroom. Corridors need enough cooling to prevent hot air from flowing into classrooms when doors open. We design each zone on its own air circuit with a separate thermostat; the final layout depends on floor area and ceiling height on site.

Can ductwork be added to an existing school building?

In most cases, yes. We check the gap between the ceiling and the slab, and how accessible the ceiling void is, before making any decision. We fabricate round or rectangular ducts in our own workshop to match the building's exact dimensions, and we route them to avoid structural columns and penetrations. Where ceiling space is too tight, cassette or concealed units may be the better fit.

Why are indoor units positioned out of students' reach?

A low-mounted unit in a room full of students is easily damaged: fins get bent, the drain port gets blocked, and the fan grille gets broken. We mount units at heights and positions that keep them clear of students, while still delivering cooled air down to the seated zone. The precise position is set after the team measures ceiling height and seating layout in each room.

Can the work be done during the school year?

Large tasks such as running new ductwork or replacing multiple units are scheduled during the long summer break to avoid any disruption to lessons. Routine maintenance and isolated repairs can be arranged outside school hours or at weekends in coordination with school management. Work inside classrooms during the school day requires a site assessment first to confirm it can be done without causing disruption.

How do you ensure even cooling across all the classrooms?

We calculate the cooling load for each classroom and design the ducts with appropriate diameters, placing distribution outlets precisely to avoid temperature differences between rooms.

Can the central AC be installed during the school year?

Installation requires cutting runs and working on ceilings and walls, so the summer break is the ideal time to avoid classroom disruption and noise during lessons.

The intense heat in East Jeddah affects cooling performance, how do you address this?

We select compressor units with adequate capacity to handle peak summer loads, and recommend routine pre-summer maintenance to clean coils and fans.

Does the school's electrical wiring need upgrades for the AC system?

We visit the school beforehand to assess the electrical circuit and current load, and recommend any necessary upgrades to ensure safe operation.
