Central AC for apartments

Apartment central AC in Al Shifa

In Al Shifa, south Jeddah, installing central AC in flats faces intense summer heat and high coastal humidity. Alrabih designs an efficient system that distributes cool air evenly and handles condensate drainage in a damp environment.

When central AC makes sense in your flat

  1. 1

    New flat before finishing

The finishing stage is the right time to install central AC. The ceiling is open and walls are ready for copper and drain routes, so there is no need later to cut plaster or damage finished surfaces.

  2. 2

Occupied flat where splits fall short

If splits leave hot and cold patches, or the noise bothers you at night, central AC distributes air evenly and hides the unit away from the room. A site survey decides whether your ceiling height allows it.

  3. 3

    Your unit disturbs the neighbours

In apartments, neighbours hear unit vibration through shared ceilings and walls. We choose the indoor unit suspension point carefully and use flexible collars on the air outlets to absorb vibration before it reaches the building structure.

Who it's for

  • Living in a furnished flat and want to replace splits

We survey your ceiling void to see whether a concealed unit fits, then run copper and drain without disturbing the existing décor.

  • Buying a flat in a building under construction

We coordinate with the finishing stage to run copper, drain and ducts before ceilings and walls are closed, so every route stays fully concealed.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Ceiling and route survey

We measure the available ceiling void, decide where the indoor unit hangs, map the copper route and find where condensate drains without causing damp. The survey decides whether one zone or more suits the flat.

  2. 2

    Run copper and drain

We run insulated Mueller copper in the void above the suspended ceiling and slope the condensate line towards the building drain or an external outlet, so no standing water causes odour or damp.

  3. 3

    Fit ducts and outlets

We mount the indoor unit on vibration-absorbing hangers, route ducts to each room and place every outlet so air spreads evenly without blowing cold air directly onto anyone.

  4. 4

    Vacuum, test and hand over

We vacuum the copper line to remove air and moisture, check all joints, then run the unit and confirm cooling in every room before we hand over.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Shifa is a relatively modern residential district in south Jeddah near the sea, with multi-storey blocks of medium-sized flats and tight ceiling voids. High coastal humidity means condensate drainage must be highly effective to prevent moisture build-up in ceiling voids and walls, and cool air distribution needs precise balance to keep electricity consumption efficient.

Al Shifa lies in south Jeddah's coastal sector near the sea, an area of modern blocks in a humid coastal climate.

Most flats here need medium to high cooling capacity because of heat and humidity, and drain pipes require special treatment to prevent mould.

The AC setup in Al Shifa

  1. 1

Medium to high capacity indoor unit

Coastal heat and humidity require a unit that cools and dries simultaneously, ensuring better comfort and indoor air quality.

  2. 2

Insulated ducts with improved drain design

Damp ceiling voids need well-insulated ducts with safe drain openings to prevent water pooling and mould growth.

  3. 3

    Safe drainage with anti-mould treatment

Insulated drain pipes treated with anti-mould compounds prevent bacteria and mould growth in the system during high humidity.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Shifa

  1. 1

Check the ceiling void for moisture and ventilation

Inspect the ceiling void before the visit, confirm sufficient ventilation openings, and check for prior leaks or water pooling.

  2. 2

Identify a safe and efficient drain route

Locate the main drainage pipes and confirm they are clear and unobstructed before we connect the new condensate line.

  3. 3

Provide a sketch showing the flat's sea-facing direction

Tell us which way the flat faces the sea so we can calculate heat and moisture exposure and recommend an appropriately sized unit.

FAQ

Questions about Apartment central AC

Is there enough ceiling space in a flat for a central unit?

It varies between flats. Slim ceiling cassettes need less void depth than full ducted units. A site survey measures what is available and decides the right type; if the corridor ceiling is too shallow we look at a storage room or bathroom ceiling instead.

Is one unit enough for the whole flat or do I need more?

It depends on the flat's area, room layout and how much sun each side receives. Two- and three-bedroom flats can sometimes work with one unit and well-planned ducts; larger flats or those with separate zones may need two. The survey decides.

Where does the outdoor unit go when the flat has no large balcony?

Options include the shared roof if the building rules allow it, a facade bracket away from neighbours' windows, or the balcony if it can take the load. We review the building's rules before recommending any position.

Jeddah's air is very humid; does that affect the condensate drain?

Yes. In Jeddah the indoor unit produces more condensate because of the high humidity. We make sure the drain line has enough fall, that the horizontal run before it drops is not too long, and that the outlet does not conflict with other flats' drainage in the building.

Can the flat be split into two zones with different temperatures?

It is possible using two separate indoor units or by adding variable-flow dampers on the duct runs. The right choice depends on the flat's layout and the ceiling void available in each zone. A site survey decides which approach suits your room arrangement.

The humidity in my flat is very high, will central AC reduce it?

Yes, the indoor unit removes moisture from the air during cooling, but the drain pipes must be clear and safe to discharge water efficiently.

The damp coastal climate may cause mould in the AC, how do you prevent it?

We install insulated drain pipes with proper slope for fast drainage, and choose units with improved evaporator design to prevent moisture accumulation.

The ceiling void may be damp, will this affect the unit?

Damp ceiling voids need extra ventilation, so we install the unit to prevent moisture pooling around it and ensure safe drainage.

How do I choose the right unit size for high heat and humidity?

We assess the flat's size, windows and sea-facing direction to calculate the heat and moisture load, then recommend a unit sized for local conditions.
