Retail cooling without downtime

Mall & retail HVAC in Al Faisaliyah

In Al Faisaliyah, central Jeddah, major malls and retail shops need robust HVAC to handle constant footfall and intense heat from doors opening all day. Alrabih designs and installs centralised systems that absorb the shifting loads and keep stock dry.

When you need a retail HVAC specialist

  1. 1

A new mall or shopping centre

A poor design from the start means cold zones next to stifling ones and endless tenant complaints. We study the heat load of each zone separately and choose the right unit type before the ceiling is built.

  2. 2

An existing shop with uneven cooling

The back of the shop is cold while the front near the door stays hot at peak hours. The cause is usually the air outlet layout or the unit size; a site survey identifies which and fixes the problem without replacing the whole system.

  3. 3

Condensate dripping on shelves or display

A single drip on stock or a glass display front damages the product and the shop's image. The cause is usually weak insulation, a blocked condensate line or an unlevel unit, all of which can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit.

Who it's for

  • Opening a new shop inside a mall

We design an independent unit for your space and install ductwork and condensate lines before finishing work so your opening is not delayed.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and loads

We visit the site and map every heat source: entrances, lighting, expected crowd density and facade orientation, then size the units correctly for each section.

  2. 2

    Design and materials

We design the duct network in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to dimensions that give even air distribution, and select units from brands we distribute such as Carrier, YORK and Gree.

  3. 3

    Installation coordinated on site

We coordinate installation with the project programme so ductwork does not delay finishing trades, and run Mueller copper in runs of up to 30 metres without welded joints to reduce potential leak points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and maintenance contract

We start up the system and check air distribution in every section, then set a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule timed so work never overlaps with the shop's trading hours.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Faisaliyah is a modern commercial zone with large malls and broad glass fronts, wide car parks, but the AC pressure is severe because doors open constantly, lighting is intense and crowds shift hourly. The central system here must rebalance temperature every hour, prevent moisture seeping into stock rooms, and maintenance must fit the shop's closing hours to avoid trading disruption.

Al Faisaliyah sits in Jeddah's commercial centre, a zone of modern malls with glass fronts and very high heat loads.

Most major malls in Al Faisaliyah rely on central ducted systems with insulated runs underground or in ceilings, with multiple heat units across different levels.

The AC setup in Al Faisaliyah

  1. 1

    Multi-zone central ducted system

Large malls need a central system with separate zones per section or floor, allowing independent temperature control based on varying heat loads across the mall.

  2. 2

    High-capacity units for main entrances

Main entrances with doors opening constantly need stronger heat units to counter the severe heat ingress from outside.

  3. 3

    Integrated dehumidification system

Coastal humidity combined with continuous AC requires a separate drying system to protect stock quality and reduce mould and corrosion.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Faisaliyah

  1. 1

    Obtain the mall's engineering blueprint

Before our visit, ensure the mall's engineering drawings are available, showing existing duct runs, ceiling layout and plant rooms.

  2. 2

Coordinate with mall management and the building engineer

Contact the mall management and the site engineer, inform them of the visit date and any requirements regarding safety or temporary shutdowns.

  3. 3

    Identify outdoor unit locations

Confirm where outdoor units will be mounted on the roof or side, ensuring safe access for the team and sufficient space for duct and cable runs.

FAQ

Questions about Mall & retail HVAC

How do you handle doors that open onto the street all day?

An open door pushes in hot humid air and spikes the heat load suddenly. We include that load in the design and direct a supply outlet above the entrance to form an air barrier that reduces mixing. The survey confirms which arrangement suits each specific doorway.

Do you install separate units for each mall tenant?

Yes. A separate unit per tenant means each shop controls its own cooling and a fault in one unit does not affect the neighbour. It also makes consumption readings straightforward and makes maintenance responsibility clear for each party.

Why do you prefer rooftop packaged units for malls?

A rooftop packaged unit keeps the condenser and evaporator in one casing above the roof, freeing every inch of shop floor from outdoor units and shortening the duct run. Maintenance happens on the roof without entering the shop, which fits scheduling work outside trading hours.

How do you handle Jeddah's heat and its effect on rooftop units?

Rooftop units in Jeddah work in hot, salty and dusty air that strains the condenser and speeds fin corrosion. We specify units with corrosion-resistant coatings and include coil cleaning and compressor and condenser checks in the preventive schedule of every maintenance contract.

Does air distribution design differ between a small shop and a large mall?

The site survey decides. A small shop may need only a concealed unit with directional grilles, while a mall requires a duct network with dampers zoned by area. In both cases the positions of lighting, visitor traffic and entry doors are recorded before supply outlets are placed.

How do you handle the intense heat from constantly opening mall doors?

We install a central system with sufficient capacity and position the ducts carefully to rebalance quickly when doors open, and assign separate cooling zones to entrances.

Where do you run the ducts in an existing mall building?

We survey the building layout first, then typically run the ducts underground or in the suspended ceiling, or use existing shafts where possible to minimise structural work.

Sea humidity and constant HVAC affect stock, how do you protect it?

We integrate a dehumidification system with the AC and ensure water drainage from the coils runs safely away from stock rooms and floors.

Does maintenance disrupt the shops' trading hours?

No, we coordinate with the mall management to schedule maintenance during closing hours or quiet periods, and plan well ahead so trading is not affected.
