Hospital HVAC in Al Aqeeq

In Al Aqeeq, north Jeddah, hospital cooling systems demand precision because any stoppage in an operating theatre or ICU poses patient safety risk. Alrabih designs systems from each department's needs and building survey, and carries out maintenance without closing wards.

When you need a medical HVAC specialist

  1. 1

    Hospital or clinic under construction

The right design starts before any duct is installed, because ventilation and filtration needs differ from the surgical suite to the waiting area. An early survey saves costly alterations after the building is finished.

  2. 2

Departments reporting warm air or odours

In an existing medical building, weak cooling in one department or odours crossing into an adjacent area signals an imbalance in the air distribution or extraction system. Finding the cause needs measurement, not guesswork.

  3. 3

Maintenance contract for a running facility

A hospital does not close for equipment servicing. We schedule preventive maintenance visits department by department, coordinated with facility management, and carry out repairs with the smallest possible effect on daily operations.

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Survey and requirements

We visit the facility, map the heat loads and air requirements for each department, and agree the duct routes before any design work begins.

  2. 2

    Design and supply

We design the duct network and fabricate it in our own workshop to SMACNA specifications, and supply units from our authorised brands: Carrier, YORK, General, Midea, Gree and Smart Gold.

  3. 3

    Phased coordinated installation

In operating buildings we work with management to phase the installation so adjacent departments stay open, and control dust and noise away from patient areas.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and follow-up

We commission the systems, measure airflow in each department, and adjust the dampers until the design requirements are met, then hand over the facility with a maintenance plan.

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.

What sets this district apart

Hospitals in Al Aqeeq and the northern zones are relatively new-built and house multiple departments across large areas with complex floor plans, demanding an efficient centralised cooling network spread across many levels. Each ward has different climate needs: operating theatres require precise temperature and humidity control, intensive care needs specific air pressure, and other wards have less demanding specs. Regular maintenance and continuous monitoring are vital to keep the system running without stoppage year-round.

Al Aqeeq lies in north Jeddah, a zone of recent urban development with broad commercial, medical and residential blocks and large public halls.

Central cooling systems in hospitals manage high airflow rates and variable pressures by medical department, and require precise mechanical and electronic monitoring.

The AC setup in Al Aqeeq

  1. 1

    Centralised system with zoned control

Modern hospitals in Al Aqeeq run a centralised cooling network distributed across floors with separate controls per ward to ensure each department gets its required climate.

  2. 2

High-capacity outdoor condensers on hospital roofs

The broad roofs of modern hospitals in the zone provide ample space for powerful condensers that cover the high cooling demand across all departments.

  3. 3

Advanced air filters and insulated ducts

Distributed ducts are insulated to prevent heat loss, and high-efficiency filters protect the system and patients from dust and contaminants.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Aqeeq

  1. 1

    List the hospital's priority departments

Tell us which departments have the highest priority for urgent maintenance, such as operating theatres and ICUs, so we plan the visit to minimise any impact on medical work.

  2. 2

Coordinate with hospital administration and in-house maintenance

Ensure hospital administration and in-house maintenance staff agree on the visit time and any restrictions on accessing sensitive areas.

  3. 3

Confirm access to roofs and main ductwork

Verify that our team can safely reach hospital roofs and the areas housing main ducts and condensers before the visit day.

FAQ

Questions about Hospital HVAC

How do ventilation needs differ across hospital departments?

Ventilation needs vary from one department to the next based on the activity in each area and the requirements set by the facility's designer and the site survey. Operating theatres need highly filtered, directionally controlled air, while patient rooms, corridors and administrative areas each carry different requirements. We build the duct network and select units from the facility's drawings and its specific requirements, not from general assumptions.

Can systems be maintained without stopping sensitive departments?

Yes, but it requires careful planning before the maintenance date. We agree with facility management on a schedule that names the section and the right time window, then isolate the target section using dampers and blanking plates without affecting adjacent departments. Corrective tasks such as replacing a capacitor or repairing a flare joint are carried out within the agreed time window.

What governs duct network design in a medical building?

Design is governed by the approved facility drawings and each department's requirements as defined by the site survey and the specialist designer. We fabricate ducts in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to project dimensions, and use Kimmco and Armaflex insulation with Foster sealants to control leakage. Distribution and pressure in each section follow the specifications drawn for that department individually.

Do you work with small clinics or only hospitals?

We work with medical facilities of all sizes, from a clinic in a residential district to a multi-storey medical complex. The size of the facility does not change the principle: the site survey is the starting point, and from it we determine unit types, duct dimensions and fresh-air requirements for each zone. Preventive and corrective maintenance contracts are available for clinics and hospitals alike.

How do you design an AC system for a hospital with different wards?

We assess each ward separately: operating theatres and ICUs need strict temperature and humidity control, whilst other wards need general comfort. We design a distributed central network with separate control for each zone.

Does hospital maintenance require closing wards during the working day?

No, we carry out maintenance without closing wards, working gradually on parts of the system while keeping cooling active across the rest of the building. Patients and staff stay in a controlled environment at all times.

Does dust and the northern zone's climate affect system efficiency?

Yes, high summer heat and humidity put strain on the system's condensers, and dust collects on filters. We set up intensive regular maintenance schedules during hot and humid months.

Do hospital electrical wiring and connections need special checking?

Yes, hospitals house sensitive medical equipment that demands stable power supply. We check the electrical circuits feeding the AC system and verify there is no voltage fluctuation that could damage medical devices.
