Retail cooling without downtime

Mall & retail HVAC in Al Balad

In Al Balad, historic downtown Jeddah, retail HVAC faces constant pressure from doors opening to intense heat, bright lighting and fluctuating crowds. Alrabih designs and installs systems that track those shifts and protect stock from moisture.

When you need a retail HVAC specialist

  1. 1

A new mall or shopping centre

A poor design from the start means cold zones next to stifling ones and endless tenant complaints. We study the heat load of each zone separately and choose the right unit type before the ceiling is built.

  2. 2

An existing shop with uneven cooling

The back of the shop is cold while the front near the door stays hot at peak hours. The cause is usually the air outlet layout or the unit size; a site survey identifies which and fixes the problem without replacing the whole system.

  3. 3

Condensate dripping on shelves or display

A single drip on stock or a glass display front damages the product and the shop's image. The cause is usually weak insulation, a blocked condensate line or an unlevel unit, all of which can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit.

Who it's for

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and loads

We visit the site and map every heat source: entrances, lighting, expected crowd density and facade orientation, then size the units correctly for each section.

  2. 2

    Design and materials

We design the duct network in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to dimensions that give even air distribution, and select units from brands we distribute such as Carrier, YORK and Gree.

  3. 3

    Installation coordinated on site

We coordinate installation with the project programme so ductwork does not delay finishing trades, and run Mueller copper in runs of up to 30 metres without welded joints to reduce potential leak points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and maintenance contract

We start up the system and check air distribution in every section, then set a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule timed so work never overlaps with the shop's trading hours.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.
  • An indoor AHU unit connected to round ductwork in a mechanical plant room, exposed concrete ceiling.

What sets this district apart

Al Balad is a maze of narrow lanes and tightly packed shops under older heritage buildings, most shops modest in size with narrow street frontage. This means outdoor units are usually mounted on limited roof or facade space between closely spaced buildings, and the work needs advance coordination with the shop owner because the streets are tight and access is awkward. The old town's coastal humidity demands efficient moisture drainage from the system, and maintenance must be timed to the shop's closed hours to avoid disrupting trade.

Al Balad lies at the heart of historic Jeddah, an old market district of narrow lanes and small shops with limited roof and facade space for units.

Most small shops in Al Balad run one or two split units at most, with the outdoor unit mounted on a cramped roof or narrow facade.

The AC setup in Al Balad

  1. 1

One or two splits for the small shop

Small Al Balad shops need no more than this, and splits mount easily on interior walls with the outdoor unit on the roof or facade.

  2. 2

    Effective moisture drainage

With high coastal humidity, we ensure the condensate pan drains properly with correct slope and clean lines.

  3. 3

    Maintenance outside trading hours

We schedule regular maintenance and cleaning early morning or evening to avoid disrupting customers.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Balad

  1. 1

Book a time outside trading peak hours

Tell us your shop hours and typical customer flow so we can pick the best time to work.

  2. 2

Confirm roof or facade access for the outdoor unit

Check that the roof or facade planned for the outdoor unit is safe and accessible on the visit day.

  3. 3

Liaise with building owner or manager if needed

If the shop is under building management, notify them in advance to avoid clashes with other maintenance.

FAQ

Questions about Mall & retail HVAC

How do you handle doors that open onto the street all day?

An open door pushes in hot humid air and spikes the heat load suddenly. We include that load in the design and direct a supply outlet above the entrance to form an air barrier that reduces mixing. The survey confirms which arrangement suits each specific doorway.

Do you install separate units for each mall tenant?

Yes. A separate unit per tenant means each shop controls its own cooling and a fault in one unit does not affect the neighbour. It also makes consumption readings straightforward and makes maintenance responsibility clear for each party.

Why do you prefer rooftop packaged units for malls?

A rooftop packaged unit keeps the condenser and evaporator in one casing above the roof, freeing every inch of shop floor from outdoor units and shortening the duct run. Maintenance happens on the roof without entering the shop, which fits scheduling work outside trading hours.

How do you handle Jeddah's heat and its effect on rooftop units?

Rooftop units in Jeddah work in hot, salty and dusty air that strains the condenser and speeds fin corrosion. We specify units with corrosion-resistant coatings and include coil cleaning and compressor and condenser checks in the preventive schedule of every maintenance contract.

Does air distribution design differ between a small shop and a large mall?

The site survey decides. A small shop may need only a concealed unit with directional grilles, while a mall requires a duct network with dampers zoned by area. In both cases the positions of lighting, visitor traffic and entry doors are recorded before supply outlets are placed.

My shop is very small, do I need a central AC system?

No, one or two splits suit most small Al Balad shops. We assess the space and airflow on site and recommend the most fitting and cost-effective option.

The street outside is very narrow, how will you bring in the outdoor unit?

We will schedule outside peak hours and carry the unit by hand through the lane, and coordinate with you to open a rear entry if one exists.

The old town's humidity affects my goods, will the AC protect them?

Yes, we select a system with adequate moisture-drainage capacity for your space, but good drainage depends on regular cleaning of the filter and drain lines.

When can you install the system without closing my shop?

We can usually split the installation across multiple early-morning visits before opening or evening visits after closing, whichever suits you.
